4-Day Trip: Agadir to the Sahara Desert (Erg Chegaga)

4 Days

An epic 4-day journey from Agadir to the wild dunes of Erg Chegaga — crossing the highest mountain pass in North Africa, visiting the UNESCO Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, and reaching the most remote and spectacular dunes in Morocco for a truly authentic Sahara experience.

4-Day Desert Adventure

Agadir to Erg Chegaga Sahara

This 4-day expedition from Agadir to Erg Chegaga is one of Morocco's most dramatic journeys — a full sensory contrast between the warm Atlantic coast, the soaring peaks of the High Atlas, and the vast, silent expanse of the Sahara. Unlike the more frequently visited Merzouga dunes, Erg Chegaga is wild, remote, and genuinely awe-inspiring.

The adventure begins on Day 1 with a scenic drive north from Agadir through rugged terrain towards the Berber mountain village of Imlil, nestled at the foot of Mount Toubkal — the highest peak in North Africa. Here, you'll spend the night in a traditional kasbah or guesthouse, enjoying a home-cooked dinner and crisp mountain air.

Day 2 is the great Atlas crossing — driving over the legendary Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260m) with its hairpin bends and breathtaking views, before descending into the pre-Saharan world of Ait Benhaddou. This fortified mud-brick ksar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and filming location for dozens of blockbusters, is one of Morocco's most photogenic places. You'll stay overnight in Ait Benhaddou or the nearby city of Ouarzazate.

Day 3 is the deep Sahara dive — driving further south through palm groves and ancient kasbahs to the remote oasis town of M'hamid, where the paved road ends. From here, a 4x4 takes you off-road across the hammada stony desert and the dry bed of Lake Iriqui to reach the towering dunes of Erg Chegaga. At over 40km long, these are among the largest and most isolated dunes in all of Morocco. Arrive for a sunset camel trek, traditional Moroccan dinner, and drumming around the campfire under a sky blazing with stars.

On Day 4, rise early for one last sunrise over the dunes before breakfast at camp and the long but beautiful drive back to Agadir — with a chance to reflect on the extraordinary contrast between ocean, mountain, and desert that makes this journey truly unique.
