The Agafay Desert: Morocco's Desert Hiding in Plain Sight

Most visitors to Marrakech don't realise that a genuine desert experience is available less than 30 minutes from the city. The Agafay Desert — a rocky, dramatic landscape of hammada (stone desert) and arid hills, framed by the snow-capped High Atlas Mountains — offers one of the most spectacular settings in all of Morocco, without the three-hour drive to Merzouga.

Our evening experience in the Agafay is designed for those who want adventure, culture, and the magic of the desert sky — all in the space of a single, unforgettable evening.

The Adventure Begins: Quad Biking in the Agafay

After pickup from your Marrakech riad or hotel, the drive to the village of Takerkoust takes around 30 minutes. Here, after a brief safety briefing, you'll mount a quad bike for a guided ride through the rocky terrain of the Agafay Desert.

The landscape is extraordinary — unlike any other desert in Morocco. Instead of sand, the Agafay is a vast plateau of dark volcanic rock and pale hammada, broken by dry riverbeds and low hills, with the Atlas Mountains rising dramatically to the south. On quad bikes, you cover ground quickly, navigating tracks and open desert as the afternoon light begins to warm.

The Camel Caravan: Riding Towards Sunset

After the quad bikes, the pace slows dramatically. Gather for a camel caravan ride — a gentle, swaying trek through the unique Agafay landscape that takes you directly to the camp as the sun begins its descent. Camels at sunset, with the Atlas behind them and the desert light turning everything golden — it's one of those images that defines Morocco, and it's worth every photograph.

stargazing Marrakech, Agafay camp experience

Camp at Dusk: Dinner, Music & Stars

The Berber camp in the Agafay is beautiful: traditional tents lit with lanterns, low tables set for dinner, the smell of tagine cooking over charcoal, and a campfire at the centre of it all. As the desert cools rapidly after sunset, the warmth of the fire and the food is deeply welcome.
Dinner is a full traditional Moroccan spread — fresh salads, slow-cooked tagine, Moroccan bread, local dessert, and mint tea. As the meal ends, the music begins: live Berber drumming, Gnawa rhythms, and a fire show that lights up the desert night.
Then, as the fire dies and the sky darkens, the stars appear. The Agafay's distance from Marrakech's light pollution makes it an excellent stargazing spot — on a clear night, the Milky Way is visible with the naked eye, and shooting stars are common. It is a profoundly peaceful way to end an evening.
