Why Merzouga Should Be on Every Morocco Itinerary
Morocco is a country of extraordinary contrasts — ancient medinas, snow-capped mountains, and vast desert expanses. But if there is one experience that stays with travellers longest, it is sleeping in the Sahara Desert. And nowhere in Morocco does the Sahara reveal itself more dramatically than at Merzouga, on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes.
Our 3-day trip from Marrakech to Merzouga is one of our most popular experiences — and for good reason. It combines the very best of southern Morocco into three unforgettable days: mountain passes, UNESCO heritage sites, dramatic gorges, and finally, the vast golden silence of the desert at night.
Day 1: Crossing the High Atlas — Marrakech to Dades Gorges
The journey begins early from Marrakech, heading south through the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m) — the highest paved mountain pass in North Africa. The road is spectacular: hairpin bends carved into red rock, Berber villages perched on hillsides, and panoramic views that change every few kilometres.
The first major stop is the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Morocco's most iconic landmarks. This fortified mud-brick village has served as a backdrop for films from Gladiator to Game of Thrones. Take your time exploring its ancient alleyways and climbing to the top for a view over the surrounding landscape.
The afternoon brings you to the Valley of Roses — a lush valley between the mountains where the damask rose is cultivated for its essential oil — and then to the Dades Gorges, where you'll spend the night in a traditional kasbah. If you haven't yet understood why southern Morocco is one of the world's great road trip destinations, you will by now.
Day 2: From the Gorges to the Dunes
Day two begins with a morning walk through the Dades Gorges — rock formations shaped like monkey fingers rise above the river, creating one of Morocco's most surreal landscapes. Then you continue to the Todra Gorges, where 300-metre-high cliffs press in on either side of the river. The scale is humbling.
As you drive further south, the landscape changes: the green valleys give way to flat, sandy hammada, the pre-Saharan steppe that signals you are approaching the desert. You arrive in Merzouga by late afternoon, and a 4x4 or quad takes you directly across the Erg Chebbi dunes to your Berber camp.
The evening in camp is one of those rare travel experiences that lives up to every expectation: a traditional Berber dinner by candlelight, live Gnawa music and drumming around a campfire, and then — as the music fades and the fire dies — a sky so dense with stars that the Milky Way is clearly visible with the naked eye.
Day 3: Sunrise Over the Dunes — The Return
Set your alarm early. The Erg Chebbi at sunrise — when the first light turns the dunes from pale grey to blazing gold — is one of the most beautiful things you will see in your life. After breakfast at camp, a 4x4 takes you back to Merzouga village, and the long journey home begins.
The return route crosses the magnificent Draa Valley — Morocco's longest river valley, lined with hundreds of thousands of date palms and ancient kasbahs — before climbing back through the Anti-Atlas and arriving in Marrakech by evening.
