Essaouira Coastal Day Trip

Just 2.5 hours from Marrakech, Essaouira is one of Morocco's most charming and distinctive cities — a laid-back, wind-swept Atlantic town with a beautifully preserved UNESCO-listed medina, vibrant blue fishing boats, and a rich artistic and musical heritage. This full-day excursion is a perfect contrast to the intensity of Marrakech.
The drive from Marrakech to Essaouira is itself a pleasure — passing through the unique argan forest, where you'll often spot goats perched improbably in the thorny trees feeding on argan fruit. This region produces the world-famous argan oil, and there's an opportunity to stop at a women's cooperative to see the traditional oil extraction process.
Arriving in Essaouira, you'll step into a world of whitewashed walls, blue shutters, and salty sea air. Begin with a walk along the impressive Skala sea bastion, a 200m rampart lined with antique Portuguese cannons offering sweeping views of the Atlantic. Then dive into the winding lanes of the medina — a labyrinth of craft shops, galleries, spice stalls, and live Gnawa music.
The fishing port is a highlight not to be missed: a chaotic, colourful world of blue boats, fresh catch, and working fishermen that feels completely authentic. Nearby, the artisan quarter is famous for its thuya wood workshops, where craftsmen carve intricate objects from the fragrant root of the local thuya tree.
Lunch is a celebration of fresh seafood — grilled fish, prawns, and calamari at a harbour restaurant or in the medina — before an afternoon to relax on the wide, windswept beach, explore the souks, or visit a local gallery. Return to Marrakech in the evening with sand between your toes and the smell of the ocean in your hair.
